Bob Dylan, Christmas in the Heart - 2009
Just listening to the Christmas album of Bod Dylan. It is called “Christmas in the Heart” and contains the most of what we know as ‘Christmas hits’ - Here Comes Santa Claus, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Little Drummer Boy, Adeste Fideles, Silver Bells, etc. I admire the passion of Dylan, that before his ‘conversion’, and that of his Christian times, starting from the 1979 masterpiece “Slow Train Coming”. It was disappointing to see his ‘religious’ songs become fewer over time, but inspiration comes and goes, as we know. This new release with arrangements of traditional western songs of Christmas gave Dylan the opportunity to express his passion and faith (or should I say “knowledge”, instead of faith?), taking advantage of material already existing and familiar to all. And he does express it!
“Christmas in the Heart” is a record you will enjoy, unless, of course, you don’t like Dylan or traditional Christmas. Some songs I prefer in more classical forms - who ever gave a version of the Silver Bells more magical than that of the Vienna Boys Choir with the London Symphony Orchestra? My favorite in Dylan’s album is the Little Drummer Boy. “Christmas in the Heart” is a charity project, but it does belong also to Dylan’s creative course, having an artistic value that justifies it beyond any other purposes. Do you hear what I hear?, Dylan asks. “The Child sleeping in the night / He will bring us Goodness and Light!”
