John Scofield’s Piety Street features a set of Gospel songs. Especially when it comes to religious art, being original does not concern aesthetic revolutions but the passion in which one uses a form.

Passion is not absent from this blues-jazz recording by Scofield, being described by him as “a personal search for musical inspiration beyond the standard 12 bar blues”, a search that led him to the ”old time gospel” music, “the closest relative to and inspiration for the R& B that we all love.”

“I’ve always treasured Gospel but never really dug deep into it. My search led to countless songs that really move me. It’s really powerful stuff. Of course, it will be Gospel done my way – all the arrangements are mine.”

The Songs: That’s Enough, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, It’s A Big Army, His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Something’s Got A Hold On Me, The Old Ship Of Zion, Ninety Nine And A Half, Just A Little While To Stay Here, Never Turn Back, Walk With Me, But I Like The Message, The Angel Of Death, I’ll Fly Away – Read comments by John Scofield on each song.

     John Boutte – vocals
